Anthony Omo

General Counsel and Director of Fitness to Practise
General Medical Council

Anthony leads all our work delivering our statutory function of ensuring doctors are fit to practise.  This includes an extensive reform programme and all of our in-house legal services.

Anthony joined as an in-house solicitor in 2003.  He went on to become a Principal Legal Adviser and then Assistant Director responsible for our Legal Services team in 2008.  During this time he developed and expanded our first full service in-house legal team.

He took on the extra role of Employer Liaison Service Assistant Director in 2011.  This led to the successful roll out of the service across the UK.

Anthony became Director of our Fitness to Practise directorate in 2013, and in 2015 he was appointed as our General Counsel.  In this role, Anthony acts as senior legal adviser to our Council and the Chief Executive.  Anthony is also the Scottish Government sponsor and senior sponsor and SMT champion for the GMC’s BME Network.

Anthony leads the GMC’s programme of work to support the profession provide safe care including work with partners to implement the recommendations from the ‘Fair to Refer’ and ‘Caring for Doctors Caring for Patients’ reports.

Before joining us, Anthony worked in public service.  He worked for the then Department of Health and Social Security and the Crown Prosecution Service.  Anthony is also a solicitor.
